Norma was a visitor to Englewood this past winter.

She saw a photo of my boat "in irons".

The reflection was what drew her to create this beautiful piece of art for me.

Change...

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008.

Members and friends of the Englewood Art Center gathered today for a pot-luck-supper. They were there to thank the woman who, in a few short years, made the the EAC both functional and meaningful to members and the community.
I give the evening a four star-rating ****. And the two dozen or so speakers spoke earned a four-Kleenex rating for their heart-felt performances.

Laura McCrocklin was leaving.

The reasons are a little hard to take and can be chalked up to progress. Englewood's art center has a chance to move into the "big time;" it became a part of the Ringling School of Art & Design on May 31.

The Ringling, which headquarters in Sarasota, is one of the leading art institutions in this country. It is ranked by many as Number One. They are an academic institution, with academic ways of doing things. Change is in the air.
The Englewood Art Center board of directors and trustees is no more. Instead, an advisory committee of active EAC members and local supporters has been formed: Rachel Parios, Bill Minor, Mary Ann Burke, Ceci Kueltzo and Jane Russell. It'll be their job to explain Englewood to Ringling.

Laura McCrocklin served as manager of the EAC until mid-July. "I hate leaving a place that I know and love," she says. "I hope that the Englewood Art Center will continue to grow and prosper and remain a 'social and fun' learning facility." No bad feelings; simply an acknowledgment of the anticipated change.

Rachel Parios, three-time president of the EAC said that the evening was, "An appreciation party to let us express our feelings." She described what Laura did for the EAC saying, "When Laura came, we were in a mess. She took that mess, figured out what needed to be done -- and did it." The appreciation party attendees stood to give Laura an ovation.

Then members, award-winners, instructors, friends and members came to the podium to tell what Laura's being there meant to them.

Having taken a few days off, Laura McCrocklin is looking for another group or organization to work with. If you know of any group, institution or company in need of a sharp, effective person (with terrific people skills) to help out, e-mail her at lauramccee@embarqmail.com
